Tribe of Mentors by Tim Ferris contains over 600 pages of interviews that will inspire you and give you access to varying points-of-from a variety of business experts.

How Tribe of Titans Came to Be

On his 40th birthday, entrepreneurial guru Tim Ferris had a mid-life crisis when he realized that he had no plans for life after 40.  Having narrowly escaped suicide in college then getting his first manuscript rejected 27 times he just never thought he would live past 40.

At this crossroad, he asked himself lots of questions, the most profound being, “What if I assembled a tribe of mentors to help me guide me on what to do next?” Thus this super helpful and intriguing book was created by 100+ mentors’ answers to Tim’s probing questions.

I related to his midlife crisis and his instinctive drive to ask questions to plan the future. This questioning process has always been my path when faced with quandaries in business and life.

His goal was both to share the wisdom of his mentor tribe and to train us to ask better questions of ourselves and others. This is best illustrated by Milan Kundera author of, The Unbearable Light of Being, who said, “the stupidity of people comes from having an answer for everything, wisdom comes from having a question for everything”.

I am a big fan of Tim Ferris. His first book, The Four Hour Workweek,  blew up my 9-5 work mentality and started my entrepreneurial career.

His podcast is the #1 business podcast on Apple and has exceeded 200 million downloads. In it, he deconstructs performance from an eclectic cast of achievers from many areas including business, sports, and the arts.

Funny, Tim Ferris has been called a cross between Jack Welsh, the legendary business leadership expert, and a Buddhist Monk.  He is one of Fast Company’s “Most Innovative Business People” and was an early stage investor in Uber, Facebook, Twitter, and Alibaba.

The mentors’ answers to eleven (11) thought-provoking questions form the bulk of the book’s content. These are my favorite three questions:

  • What are the three books that have greatly influenced your life?
  • What are bad recommendations you hear in your profession or area of expertise?
  • When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused what do you do?

While there are some famous people that you know such as media mogul Arianna Huffington; entrepreneur mentor and TV personality Marie Forleo; and actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, most of the contributors are new and fresh and thus more interesting.

I read about people I never knew such as author and female firefighter Caroline Paul and TV producer and comedian Whitney Cummings. Each mentor lists their contact info and social media channels so you can follow them for continuing inspiration and guidance.  Just as you would expect from industry disrupter Tim Ferriss every one of them is a bit controversial and all have unique and different perspectives

What You’ll Learn from Tribe of Mentors

You will learn practical tips on how to how to say no, from three of the busiest executives in America, the mental models of professional poker players, how losses and catastrophe motivated many creatives plus why TED curator Chris Anderson thinks that the trite advice “pursue your passion” is total crap. The tips on cheat sheets for your younger self and how to reframe and move through obstacles was priceless.

Some days my entrepreneurial stress feels overwhelming. Despair and depression among business owners is a growing epidemic. Me, I need to keep my brain positively focused to keep moving forward or else I can easily slip into a negative mindset which is a business killer and life downer.

This book helped me keep my attitude upbeat and taught me a lot about how to achieve and persevere through obstacles. I used it as a desktop reference for motivation and good business advice from high-achievers. No matter the challenge or opportunity, in your business or life, something in these pages can help.

I devoured it over one week – all 600 pages! Now every morning I start the day with a daily boost of can-do attitude and wise suggestions from my mentor tribe. By opening it at random, which I call lucky dipping, and reading that page it is uncanny how I get just the guidance I need at that moment!

Today I read a quote from one of my favorites, Greg Norman, the Great White Shark of professional golf who won over 90 tournaments worldwide –  “Your Dreams are the blueprint to reality”. The page following the quote illustrated how he this into life practice, ‘When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused, what do you do?”. First I yell “FUCK” as loud as I can! Then I compartmentalize, and DIN (do it now) and DIP (do it properly)”.

The powerful combination of quotes, profile info, and daily practices make this book exceptional and one of my favorite reads this year. So varied are the contributors and rich their answers, it will keep you interested for a long time to come.

It is an impressive looking book with a striking black and shiny gold cover. It substantive weight and length qualify it to be the office desktop version of a coffee table book and would make a nice gift for business colleagues. Also, it is very well indexed, my measure of a well put together book. There are three (3) different indexes; A-Z mentor names,  questions with answers, plus a create-your-own index.

Kick off 2019 right by tapping into the collective wisdom of these 100 brilliant mentors answers to important questions that will change your business and your life.
